I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t always know the important facts for maintaining your tires. I mean, that’s usually my husband’s department. But I think it’s important for all moms to know a thing or two about the vehicle you drive. After all, we probably spend more time in the car than anyone else in the family, getting the kids everywhere they need to go.
When you think about it, tires are one of the most important parts of your vehicle. You wouldn’t get too far without them now, would you? And when one is damaged, it stops you in your tracks!
Here are some facts for maintaining your tires that every car owner should know
Wheel Alignment and Balance
This is important to get the most wear out of your tires. It will also affect your driving if your tires are out of balance, often pulling the vehicle to the left or right. Your car may even vibrate or shake from being out of alignment. Typically your dealer can perform these services and they are experienced with the make and model of car you purchased from them.
You want all of your tires to wear evenly and the same. So it’s important to rotate your tires on a regular basis (it’s recommended every 7500 miles) to prevent irregular wear.
All tires experience wear. The challenge is knowing when it’s time to replace your tires. If your tire has a split, bulge, crack, puncture or cut, it either needs to be repaired or replaced. If the tire cord fabric is showing through the rubber, it’s definitely time to replace them!
Tire pressure is important as it can affect the way your car handles, which means it affects your safety and the safety of your family. Overinflated tires can cause a bumpy ride and make it difficult to navigate your vehicle. Underinflated tires can affect your gas mileage and potentially overheat, which is a very dangerous situation as it can lead to a blowout.
As we all know, sometimes even despite our best efforts, unexpected problems happen. That’s why it’s essential to always have a spare tire in your car. You never know when you might need it.
