Buying a car for your teen can be a controversial subject. Some people are all for it, while others insist you shouldn’t get your kids a car at all.
Whatever your take on the stance, I strongly feel it’s every parent’s choice to do what they see fit. But if you are in favor of buying your teen a car, we’d like to help.

No, not actually help you buy the car! (As much as we would like to, wouldn’t that be nice?!)
But help you decide what to buy.
You pretty much have two choices: buy new or buy pre-owned. I think the benefits to buying new are pretty obvious.
So to help you stay informed in all areas, we’re going to give you 3 reasons to buy a used car for your teen.
Reason #1- It’s Cheaper
Your budget is most likely the number one deciding factor when it comes to choosing which car to purchase, am I right? Buying a pre-owned vehicle is definitely going to save you money. Which is great, you can put it towards your teen’s cell phone bill! 🙂
Reason #2- Less Worry About Damage
When your kid is taking the car out, of course their safety is number one. What’s number two? I’d say worrying about damage to the car. Let’s face it, teen drivers don’t have tons of driving experience and might even have a few minor fender benders while learning to drive. The thought of giving my teen driver a brand spanking new perfectly intact car makes me a little nauseous, to be honest!
With a used car, it likely already has a few scrapes, scratches and such. So if they scrape the side of the carport when backing out of the driveway, you don’t have to worry so much about the car itself. Only the carport, ha ha!
Reason #3- Easier To Get Financing
Borrowing less usually means you’re more likely to get a loan. You might even be able to help your (older) teen get a loan if they’re working, simply by cosigning the note for them. This can really help their credit down the road.
There you have it! We hope these 3 reasons to buy a used car for your teen will help you make the choice when the time comes.
