Moms everywhere are doing it, they're finding ways to work at home. And while they might not be going the typical route and doing what society thinks they should be doing, they are living life on their terms and doing what is best for their family.
Maybe you're a mom who stays home with your kids and you're wanting to find a way to help bring in additional income, or maybe you go off to work every day but you're really yearning to stay home with your kids. In any case, we have some ideas that will help you get started on your work at home journey.
None of the options mentioned below are get rich quick jobs (do those even really exist?) but are businesses you can build with income possibilities that vary from a little extra money to replacing your previous income (and possibly your husbands, too!). Note: Affiliate links are included in this post, however, we only recommend things that we believe will benefit our readers.
Become a Freelance Writer
Freelance writing is something that, if you really love to write, can start earning you income right away. It's really a matter of making sure you have a little training and know something about what you're doing, then finding the right clients. This is where networking really comes into play as well. I always say that you never know where an opportunity might be waiting, so I try to remember that in every conversation I have and everyone I meet, whether online or in person.
It always helps me to see the way someone who is doing what I want to do is making it work. Sometimes they even offer helpful courses, eBooks and even blog posts that will show you exactly how they got to where they are. One person I've learned a lot from is Gina Horkey.
Gina is a freelance writer who has taken her business from small time to big time in a matter of months! If you don't believe me you can check out her latest income report here. Gina's course 30 Days or Less to Freelance Writing Success is an awesome way to learn all the ins and outs of becoming a freelance writer. The thing I like the best is it gives you actionable steps at the end of each chapter that you can put into practice and get started on your freelance writing journey today! You probably already use products that you would be able to easily recommend to others because you love them and use them regularly. That's the basis of direct selling, finding a product(s) you believe in and sharing it with the world. The good thing about this is that most companies are already established and have extensive training materials for you to utilize as you grow your business.
I personally know quite a few moms that have been successful in this type of business. The good thing about it is, you can work as much or as little as you like…YOU control how big your business gets. Maybe you're only looking to earn a few hundred dollars a month while you stay home with your babies, or maybe you're looking to grow and become a top earner in your company. Either way, becoming a direct seller opens up a wide range of possibilities.
Another positive is that in most direct selling companies you can choose how you want to work. Love getting together with women and having parties? You can do that if it works for you. More of an online person? Most companies offer you your own website and even online training on how and where to find customers, even how to go about contacting them. I've seen moms earn bonuses like new cars and even trips as well as a healthy living, all while working at home.
Invent a product
Think about it, everything we use in life today was invented by someone. Just look around your room…From the furniture and decorations in your house to common household objects…heck, even the computer you're reading this post on! The possibilities are really endless! And while inventing a product is a big deal and there is a lot to learn, there are moms who have done it and are more than willing to help you achieve the same level of success!
Tamara Monosoff is a mom inventor who helps moms learn the ins and outs of product invention. She's been there herself, inventing her own product the TP Saver while raising her children. You'll find a wealth of resources on her website to help you in your product launching journey, plus a plethora of books that are chock full of knowledge and resources to guide you in the right direction.
Another mom inventor who is always eager to help is Lisa Cash Hanson. Inventor of the Snuggwugg, an interactive diaper changing pillow, she took a problem that she was having with her baby, found a solution and turned it into a successful business. Her website offers tons of useful information for moms who are growing a business and raising children, and she knows what she's talking about, because she's doing that very same thing!
Become an Author
Now this is one that many people scoff at. Let's face it, the likes of becoming the next JK Rowling or Stephenie Meyer are pretty much the same as becoming a rock star. But did you know that you don't have to make it big and become uber famous to become an author and earn a nice living?
Thanks to the internet, you can write an eBook on just about anything and sell it online. There are a variety of platforms you can use and resources to help you. Amazon is a great place to find both, and there are also many successful authors and writers that offer resources to help you as well. Check out these posts from Michael Hyatt and Jeff Goins.
Start a Blog
Okay so I admit that I'm a bit biased, but this is by far my favorite way to work at home and earn money. Blogging is definitely not for the faint of heart, and takes way more work than you'll probably expect it to, but it is so worth it (or that's what I keep telling myself anyway!).
The thing about blogging is that there is more than one way to do it, and there's tons of helpful information out there to help you get started and grow your blog (dare I say too much? You can suffer from information overload which can cause you to get stuck, so make sure you limit the time you're learning and make sure you're also taking action on what you've learned).
The fun part about blogging is that you get to choose what you write about (and the hard part is making sure it's something that others want to read!). You can have a narrow niche and write about something very specific like raising rabbits, or you can go broad and have a lifestyle blog that covers many different topics such as family, travel, motherhood, etc.
Lifestyle blogs are great but I think it takes more work to become successful because there are so many topics to write about, but moms like Becky Mansfield, Paula Rollo, and Ruth Soukup make it look easy! (Want proof? Check out Becky's latest post here about how much she made from her blog last year, and be prepared to be blown away!)
Blogs that seem to do really well are blogs that focus on money and ways to earn, save, and work at home, such as Making Sense of Cents and The Work at Home Woman, and blogs that focus on helping other bloggers like Blogelina, Sarah Titus and Just a Girl and Her Blog. All of these ladies offer helpful resocures, many are paid but there's also tons of free content that will help you start a blog and grow it into the work at home business of your dreams!
There are a few blogging books that have really helped me in my journey:
Blogging on the Side: Where Passion Meets Profit is a really great resource, especially for new bloggers. Click here to view more details
How to Turn Your Blog into a Six-Figure Money Making Machine by Sarah Titus is a quick read that is chock full of helpful info. I love Sarah's honesty about where she came from and exactly what it took for her to achieve success in the blogging world.
How to Blog for Profit: Without Selling Your Soul by Ruth Soukup is like the bible of blogging. It's one you'll want to have on hand and refer to often in your blogging career.
Working at home takes time and effort. You'll definitely want to do a lot of research and learn as much as you possibly can about whatever business you're starting, company you're joining, or work at home option you're pursuing.
A word of encouragement is that you CAN do this! You might not knock it out of the park your first time, and that's okay. Sometimes it takes failing at a few things before you find what you're really good at.
The biggest thing is DON'T QUIT! Put your heart and soul into everything you do, but if something just doesn't work, don't beat yourself up about it. If you've done everything you can, then move on but keep trying. The only way to work at home successfully is to not quit until you find that one thing that you're supposed to be doing, and go for it with all your heart.
