Here are some tips to create a home office on a budget when you don’t have an entire room to work with.
Home Office Family Room Combination
This is actually what I do, I have my desk set up on one side of our family room. With four kids who each have their own rooms, I don’t have an entire room as dedicated office space.
But I have made this work. When you have little ones, it’s even beneficial as you can keep an eye on them as they play near your work space. The main thing is, have a space dedicated for your home office desk if at all possible. If this isn’t, then you might want to consider the next idea.
Portable Work Table
Use a laptop tray, rolling cart or even a TV tray (Does anyone else still use those? LOL!) as a portable work station. You can also just have a space like a shelf or closet where you can store your laptop and office supplies. Then you can do your work at the kitchen table, on the couch, or even work from your bed!
Something like this portable work table would be a great choice and it’s very affordable.
Having your office share a space in your bedroom isn’t ideal, but sometimes it is what it is and you have to make it work.
Again, it’s great if you can have a dedicated work space that includes office furniture. So if this means using a small desk or portable workstation, then do what works for you.
Working in your bedroom can at least give you a bit more privacy as you’ll be away from the noise in the rest of the house. See, look at the positives!
Small Home Office Ideas
When you think about creating a small home office, you might wonder if you can fit everything you need into one tiny space. But as with any small office design, it is what you make it. It’s up to you to include what you absolutely need to have within arm’s reach. Anything not necessary for day to day productivity can be put in storage, possibly in a hall closet or another room.
As long as you have the following in your home office design layout, you should be fine:
I wouldn’t choose something too large for a small room. A simple small desk like this should do.
This is important! You’ll likely spend countless hours in your office chair so you want to make sure it’s comfortable and supportive. Personally I look for the best office chair for lower back pain as I have back issues and a good office chair is a must-have.
If you have a decent office chair but need additional lower back support, this seat cushion is a good option.
Laptop / Desktop Computer
You likely have one of these already but if you don’t by chance, this is a tough one to recommend as there are so many options. I personally have an HP Laptop and am happy with it.
This is fun because there are a million different choices here. Choose a desk organizer based on what you actually have to organize as well as your personal taste.
More Home Office Ideas For Small Spaces
Having a window, especially a large one in a small room, not only makes the space appear larger but does wonders for inspiration. Let that natural light shine in!
But if you don’t have a window in your office, consider using a light therapy lamp to enhance your mood and a desk lamp to brighten up your work space. You can easily find both on Amazon at a decent price.
Maybe you just can’t find a suitable space for your home office. Let me ask you this: Have you looked in your closet?
More and more people are living in smaller homes these days, making an office closet a good option.
Here are a couple of closet office ideas:
Corner Desk – A good choice for a master closet or large closet would be using a small corner desk like the one below.
Portable Work Station or Laptop Table– This can easily move about but you can set it up in a walk in closet with a chair when you need to have privacy.
I hope these home office ideas on a budget have given you some great options to consider for your home office.
