There are a few simple things you can do to make your living room feel cozy. These living room decor and organization tips can help even if you’re on a budget.
Having the right living room decor can make or break a space. Here’s what I recommend to help give your living room that cozy feeling.
Lots of Throws
I love throw blankets! We have tons of them at our house…in the closet, on our blanket rack, and on the back of our sectional. One thing I love about throws is that they come in all colors, patterns, fabrics and sizes.
I always have enough throws in our living room for every member of our household. And when evening comes and we watch T.V. together, we all grab our cozy blankets and enjoy the evening. Nothing makes a living room feel more cozy than a throw blanket, in my humble opinion.
Have you seen the newest cozy blanket fad? (Of course you have, unless you don’t visit Pinterest at all, ha ha!) Chunky knit blankets are all the rage, and OMG, I SO want one of these! If you’re a DIY kinda gal, you can make one yourself. Here’s a DIY Chunky Blanket Tutorial from Country Living.
One of my favorite Home Decor bloggers shared this tutorial on a DIY Blanket Ladder made from Pallet Wood. Isn’t it cool? I think it would be a great addition to any living room and a super way to keep all your throw blankets organized!
Decorative Throw Pillows
Pillows are great, because they not only help a room feel cozy but they also get used quite a bit (at our house they do, anyway). Choosing the right decorative throw pillow can definitely add a feeling of comfort to your living room. And they have such pretty ones!
Choose pillows that match your couch, wall colors, or accent pieces in your room. If you want. Or, just choose whatever you like and call it good! I personally think any style of pillow makes a couch feel more cozy.
Another great and budget friendly option is a pillow cover. You can get a variety of styles and colors and swap them out whenever you feel like you want to change up the look a little in your living room.
Minimizing the clutter in your space, especially if it’s a small space, will help the room feel more inviting. Decluttering your house might be a big project, but one that will leave you feeling accomplished and more peaceful in the end. It’s something I’m personally working on, one room at a time. I have a long way to go, but we all have to start somewhere!
To help minimize the clutter, I try to use containers- bins, baskets, trays, crates, even shelves, whenever I can to hold the trinkets and things that wind up sitting on the entertainment center or entry table. Try to hang photos rather than setting them on a coffee or end table. And if you have kids or pets, have a small toy box in the corner of the room in case you have to scoop up a few toys at the last minute.
When I think of cozy decor, I think candles, fairy lights (or other small lights) and books. Surround yourself with sights and smells of the things you love. Have a fireplace? Bonus! There’s nothing cozier than curling up by the fire in a warm blanket and comfy socks with the ones you love.
I really miss having a rocking chair in my home. I rocked all of my babies in the same blue rocking chair, we had it forever, until it finally fell apart. We’ve also had several gliders, which I also enjoyed with my babies. There’s nothing like rocking in a rocking chair on a cold winter’s day with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in your hand. (Sounds like a Norman Rockwell painting or something!) Comfy furniture is definitely a must for making your living room cozy.
What goes better with a rocking chair, especially the glider type, than an ottoman? Nothing (except for hot chocolate!). Sometimes you can get an ottoman that matches your glider or rocking chair. We recently got a second one for our living room as I don’t like using the wall hugging recliners in our sectional (I can’t lie back!) and the top lifts so we have additional storage as well. Pretty nifty if you ask me!
Inspiring Wall Hangings
I think pictures and wall hangings can do an awful lot to a room. Put up a loud, boisterous print and you’ve got a party space. Put up a clean scenic print or inspirational text, and you’ve got yourself a cozy and inspiring living room.
Well there you have it, the best ways I know to make your living room cozy. What do you think makes a room cozy and comfortable? I’d love to hear what you think, please leave a comment below. If you enjoyed this post, please share it on Pinterest.
