Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I have all the answers to all of life’s problems. But utilizing one or more of the ideas below will definitely help lift your spirits, elevate your mood and maybe even lighten the load just a little bit.
Here are 5 Things You Can Do When You’re Feeling Discouraged
Change Your Surroundings
It’s all too easy to get discouraged when you’re in the same old rut every day. Sometimes just getting out of the house and changing your surroundings for a bit can put you in a better mood and make things seem not so bad.
Go have lunch with a friend, go shopping or get your hair or nails done. On a tight budget? Go for a walk, over to a friend or family members house, or take the kids to the park.
Talk to Someone
Whether it be a friend, family member, or a trained professional, talking about your feelings and what’s going on in your life is the first step in not only releasing your emotions, but helping to foster change. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying ‘You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge’.
Getting things off your chest is healthy, whereas letting them build up inside is not. This has been something I have had to learn over the years as I used to internalize my feelings. Unfortunately that kept me feeling bad and it made it harder to fix anything or overcome problems.
Nowadays I’m fortunate enough to have great friends and a supportive husband who I can go to when I’m feeling discouraged and down. They always help me to see the bright side of things and offer encouragement and support.
Change Your Thoughts
I love this quote from Joyce Meyer: “Change Your Words and You Can Change Your Life.” Whether you’re speaking those words out loud or merely thinking them in your head, they have power. As Joyce says, “You believe more of what you say about you than what anyone else says about you.” So you need to be thinking right and positive thoughts to replace the negative thoughts you’ve been thinking.
Do Something Nice For Someone Else
When we focus on the needs of someone else, we’re taking our eyes off of ourselves. Even if it’s only for a few moments. Give someone a ride, babysit their children, or bake them a cake. Sometimes it’s as simple as paying someone a compliment. Even if you don’t feel like it, do it anyway. You’ll be glad you did.
This should be at #1 as it should be the first thing we do. But I know it’s all too easy to forget about when you’re feeling discouraged. Try to take a moment to get somewhere quiet and pray or meditate. I like to journal. I have a book that I’ll either write what I’m feeling, or messages and quotes. I even doodle a little artwork sometimes. Let your feelings out, and be open to new ideas that might come your way. Just be still and see if by the end of your session, your feelings of discouragement haven’t lifted. At least a little bit. 🙂
If all else fails, go shopping! Ha ha! But seriously, sometimes treating myself to a little something I’ve been wanting does help lift my spirits. I know it’s not a permanent solution, but we all deserve a treat now and then, don’t we?
